The Downside To Career Law Enforcement In The Office Of Sheriff

In a statement released on his Instagram account on January 6, 2024, Dan Wilson stated the following:

I am unfortunately  seeing  a concerning trend in law enforcement associations that insist that the only individual they will support is a career law enforcement professional. They are saying they will not support the choice of the citizens they serve if that individual does not meet their criteria of what they think a sheriff should be. Why should the Sheriff (who is an elected representative of the people) be only open to career law enforcement employees? Idaho does not require that a Sheriff have a law enforcement background only that the sheriff must be a US citizen, 21 years of age and have lived in the county for at least 1 year prior to running.
Does anyone know what an undersheriff is and what their duties are? They run the day-to-day operations of the sheriff’s office. That is a clue for people who do not know.

I believe that electing career law enforcement individuals into the office of Sheriff is why we have so many issues in law enforcement today. It is incestuous and does not serve the people well. Kootenai County needs a new perspective from an outsider who has not been in a career law enforcement bubble and actually understands what the citizens are actually experiencing and are concerned about. Donald Trump did not previously hold any political office. Politicians such as Jed Bush and Chris Christie were governors and insisted that Trump did not have the experience in government to lead the country and yet Trump was exactly what the country needed. At the end of the day, law enforcement associations exist to make certain that law enforcement employees obtain the best wages and benefits and desired working conditions. Their drive is to remain comfortable in their employment and not what is best for the citizens they serve. The citizens of Kootenai County should NOT be persuaded by these organizations and their support or lack thereof of a candidate. They are ultimately looking out for their best interest and should be noted as such.

By the way, I would welcome a courteous conversation with  Neil Uhrig in person and not through public SM posts.

The General Election is on November 5, 2024.
